Band Names

Band Names

Your band name goes on every flyer, streaming profile and bass drum head you’ll ever own, so it pays to get it right. The best band names are short enough to shout from a stage, strange enough to stick, and specific enough that your music shows up when someone searches for it.

We’ve written more than 120 original band name ideas, sorted by genre and mood, with a note on the vibe each one gives off. Borrow one, mash two together, or use them to spark your own. Naming a duo or three-piece? Our trio names page has more ideas, and if your band has a podcast or a YouTube channel, try our podcast names and YouTube name ideas.

Our top picks: The Midnight Static, Velvet Undertow, Paper Lanterns Burning, Cold Coffee Riot, Hollow Crown Revival, Neon Driftwood, The Borrowed Suits, Iron Orchard, Saint Nobody, The Lo-Fi Ghosts

How to choose a band name

  • Google it — then search Spotify, Bandcamp and Instagram. If another act already uses the name, streaming services may mix up your catalogs. Also check the USPTO trademark database before printing merch.
  • Make it searchable. Common words (“The Band,” “Blue”) get buried in search results. An unusual word pairing like “Iron Orchard” is far easier to find.
  • Think about the logo. Picture the name on a kick drum, a T-shirt and a tiny streaming thumbnail. Very long names shrink badly.
  • Say it in a sentence. “Tonight, please welcome…” If it sounds awkward introduced on stage, keep brainstorming.
  • Borrow from other worlds. Books, weather, mythology and science are full of great words — try our space names or weather names for raw material.

Frequently asked questions

How do I come up with a band name?

Brainstorm words from your lyrics, influences, hometown and favorite books, then combine unexpected pairs (a soft word with a hard one works well). Shortlist five, test them on friends, and check that none are already taken on streaming platforms.

Can two bands have the same name?

Legally, a band that trademarks its name can stop others from using it commercially, and even unregistered names can have common-law rights. In practice, sharing a name also causes streaming and booking confusion, so pick something unique.

Should my band name start with “The”?

It’s a style choice. “The” gives a classic, gang-like feel (think garage rock), while dropping it feels more modern. Just be consistent across your profiles.

What makes a good band name?

A good band name is memorable, easy to spell after hearing it once, fits your genre and is available as a social handle and domain.

How do I trademark a band name?

In the US you can file with the USPTO for music and entertainment services. Many bands start with a search and a state registration, then file federally once they’re gigging and selling merch.
