How Japanese names work
- Family name first. In Japanese, Tanaka Yuki means Yuki of the Tanaka family. Since 2020 the government has encouraged this order in English too.
- Kanji choice is personal. Parents pick from the jōyō and jinmeiyō kanji lists, and some consult stroke-count fortune books.
- Kira-kira names are a trend. Some parents give unusual readings, like reading 光宙 as “Pikachu”; a 2025 rule now requires readings to be reasonably tied to the kanji.
- Mind romanization. Long vowels often vanish in English spelling: Yūki becomes Yuki and Satō becomes Sato.
