- Keep it short and radio-friendly. In an emergency you’ll say it over the VHF, so avoid names that are hard to hear or spell.
- Check the documentation rules. A US Coast Guard documented vessel needs a unique name-and-hailing-port combination marked on the hull; state-registered boats display registration numbers instead.
- Rename the traditional way. Superstition says you should hold a de-naming ceremony to ask Poseidon or Neptune to forget the old name before giving a new one.
