How to create a great fantasy name
- Match the sound to the creature. Soft vowels suit elves and fairies, and hard stops like k, g and z suit orcs, dwarves and demons.
- Borrow from real languages. Tolkien built Elvish on Finnish and Welsh, and many dwarf names come straight from the Old Norse Völuspá. See our Viking names and Celtic names for raw material.
- Keep it pronounceable. If readers or your gaming table can’t say it out loud, they’ll nickname it for you.
- Give each culture in your world its own naming rules, such as shared endings, prefixes or surname patterns.
